Monolith, Monument Valley, Utah

A Fine art photograph of one of the many monoliths in Monument Valley, Utah. Hollywood quickly realized that the landscape of Monument Valley with its rugged buttes and spires back lit with the red earth and blue sky were the perfect shots to represent the genre of the Western movies. Cowboys and Indians chasing through the wide open spaces of an empty desert gave one the feeling of the insignificance of man when compared in size to the vastness of Monument Valley. Some of the Western classics shot here, were films like John Ford's "STAGECOACH", "SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON" and "CHEYENNE AUTUMN." What is true about this area is that it is not a valley, but a flat wide landscape surrounding hundreds of monoliths that rise from the base of the land. The other truth is that it is the land of the Navajo and runs from Utah through Arizona. There are no visits to these great monoliths and unless one accompanied by a Navajo guide. It is highly sacred ground and there was a long hard battle for the Native people to hold onto their land during the silver boom days. They were in constant battles with prospectors seeking the wealth that was theirs. Now all has been settled and the Navajo are the proud caretakers of one of the ten wonders of the world.
