This is a fine art photo of the famous Roundtop Gas Station in Sherwood, Arkansas. One would never think that at one time this interesting styled building was a gas station. In 1920 there was a design competition put on by the "GAY OIL COMPANY". They were looking something eye catching, something very different, that would make people stop and fill up. The GAY OIL COMPANY had many entrys, but architect, John Parks Almand won hands down. The 'filling' station was named 'Roundtop' and opened its doors for business in 1936. It was operated by W.D. "Happy" Williford. The location was at the intersection of Highway 67 and Trammel Road in Sherwood, Arkansas. It seemed like a building that would have been on old Route 66, it soon became such a novelty that people would drive out of their way to see it. Happy Williford worked there, as the one and only, 'filling' station attendant until the place closed in 1972. Roundtop has been petitioned to be placed on National Register. It is now owned by the city of Sherwood. The Sherwood locales recently gave the old stucco building a well deserved make over with a new coat of paint, fixed the roof and re-glassed the broken windows. There are no current plans as to what to do with the Roundtop Filling Station, but one thing is for certain, it will not be torn down.
