This is a Fine Art photo of the 'MURPHEY'S DRUG' sign. This store resides in the family-friendly Murphy's, California. This was once a major thriving mining town, opened by two brothers, John and Daniel Murphy in 1844. They were originally part of the immigrant party that outfitted people traveling into the Sierra Nevada's to 'Sutter's Fort'. They were part of the founding group who came to the Great California Gold Rush, however, their wealth came as merchants much more so than miners. It is rumored that John Murphy retired quite young, leaving town with $2 million dollars neatly tucked in his saddle bags. The town had burned a total of three times and by 1893 there was no reason to rebuild, the Gold Rush was over. However, tourists come today for enjoyment of seeing the Giant Sequoia Trees in the nearby Calaveras Big Tree State Park.
