Meat Houses were very popular, before the large chain grocery stores appeared on the scene. You could always find in medium size towns the 'Meat House' where fresh cuts of meat were sliced to order and the 'Smoke House' where you could buy cured meats, such as hams for holiday occasions and whatever their specialty was, such as sausages and or wieners.
