This is a Fine Art photo of the SELZ ROYAL SHOE COMPANY sign, located somewhere on the eastern seaboard. A German immigrant, Rolf Selz, came to this country for a piece of the American dream. He was a German shoe maker and well known for his extremely fine crafted shoes. As history reports, Rolf Selz was commissioned to make Queen Elizabeth a pair of dancing shoes for her first dance as a young woman. This one pair of shoes gave him the right and privilege to add to his sign the word ‘Royal’. The Selz Royal Shoe Company closed in the late 1940s, no one could replace Rolf, his children had no wish to carry on the family tradition, so sadly, the art of fine shoe making has now been taken over by mass production, except in a few places where the art of Hand Crafted Shoes is seeing a resurgence.
