This is a delightful fine art photo of Poker Alice's House located in the heart of the Black Hills in Sturgis, South Dakota. If there ever was a legendary character of the Dakotas it would have to be Alice Tubbs. Her antics are right up there with the other great South Dakotans, like; Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickock, however, she never took 'her show' on the road. She learned to gamble from her first husband while living in Colorado. Evidently she had the best Poker Face going and her bluffs are legendary. She came to Deadwood, South Dakota in 1890 after her first husband died and there she met and married Warren Tubbs. It is rumored they had seven children, but those facts have been difficult to prove. Alice was a very busy woman, so raising children while being a professional gambler and madame might offer up quite a challenge. Sadly she lost Mr. Tubbs to Tuberculosis and had to figure out a way to support the family. Alice had her modest little house moved on wooden skids to a more central location of town and added a second floor for the Brothel activities and the down stairs was for card enthusiasts and even a few bathrooms. There were several exit doors added, so her clients, who might need to leave in a hurry, would feel safe. Alice was an excellent business woman and would not hesitate to shoot any man who might be attempting to cheat at cards. Some she killed by accidentally over shooting her victim, but each time she was released from custody as a justifiable homicide. Alice also found extra revenue in bootlegging and became quite skilled in the art of transport and sales of booze. She is best known as being a cigar smoking, tough shooting, card ace gambler, who in her younger days would wear only the finest of Paris fashions. As Alice's beauty faded and her third husband died off she became a heavy drinker which seemed to effect her judgment while playing poker. The Poker Alice House still stands as it was in 1895 in Sturgis and offers tours of this unique residence. It is visited most frequently during the famous Sturgis Bike Week, one of the biggest motorcycle rallies in the world.
