The Desert Inn Motel was once located on interstate 15 outside of Victorville, California. Its a wonderful old sign depicting the style of mid century Americana. The Mojave Desert area has so many myths and legends to it. For the most adventuresome souls who would drive across the road less desert, they would tempt fate every mile they traveled. On the roof of their cars they would carry 12 foot planks, maybe numbering 6 at most. They would lay these planks down when the sand became to unstable to drive on and then proceed driving their car forward until they needed to lay more planking. The down side to this form of travel is that they had to go back on foot and drag these boards back onto the roof of the car. Some made the crossing and others did not. The car skeletons still remain today, a desert graveyard of those attempting to cross the Mojave.
