Chief Motel

The Chief Motel is located in Shoshone, Idaho, near the famous Shoshone Ice Caves in Richfield. Ketchum and Sun Valley are a short northern drive from Shoshone along interstate 75. One of the finest American writers spent his summers in Ketchum Idaho, Earnest Miller Hemingway. Born, July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, IL, he lead the life he best wrote about. Full of adventure, he traveled the world finding his stories. His time in Paris created long lasting friendships with; Gertrude Stein, James Joyce and Ezra Pound. His books include "A FAREWELL TO ARMS", "LOST GENERATION", "THE SUN ALSO RISES", "FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS" AND "THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA". His most productive writing years were from the 1920s to the 1950s. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. As Hemingway aged, he suffered from many unfortunate maladys, Bipolar Disorder, alcohol dependence and a traumatic brain injury. He endured endless 'shock therapy treatments' at the Mayo Clinic, however they only left him in shreds. He could no longer take his declining health, so at the age of only 62 years, Hemingway thought it best to end his life with his favorite gun, a twelve-gauge Boss shot gun on July 2, 1961 in his Ketchum home with his wife Mary upstairs asleep. The report to the newspapers was that this had been accidental, however, through the years, the family allowed the truth to be known. He is buried in the town cemetery of Ketchum.
