Stagger Lee Shelton never thought the night that he killed William "Billy" Lyons would live in songs and legends for nearly one hundred years. After all it was an average night, the two good friends had been drinking, as it was their custom. Billy was only kidding around when he knocked off Stagger's Stetson hat from his head, it was simply a joke. But Stagger saw things differently and without blinking, he drew his gun and shot his best friend in the stomach. Close range, dead aim, Billy died later that night. When Stagger regained to a sober state he was truly sorry by what he had done. However, no remorse could keep him from behind the law's steel bars. There have been many songs sung from that tragedy, the tale of two friends and the murder were all too haunting, too human to be ignored, thus the perfect subject for the music of the 'blues'. There have been many rearrangements of the name Stagger Lee, but the short version 'SAHG' steamed from urban legion over the yeas. The meaning can very; Shag can be identified as having to do with sexual intercourse, a type of rough cut tobacco, an interesting sea bird and, of course, the ever famous orange, brown and yellow Shag carpet from the 1970s.
