A custom photo of the Thorncrown Chapel near Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Thorncrown Chapel was the inspiration of retired school teacher, Jim Reed, he had originally purchased this beautiful plot of land in Eureka Springs, Arkansas to build his retirement home, but the land called for something more important that he could share with many people. Mr. Reed was very fortunate to have one of the leading architects, E. Fay Jones, design this unusual reverse Gothic style chapel, which recalls the Prairie School architecture. Jones studied under the guidance of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright and created his own Ozark style of architecture. He designed buildings using the natural material of the region. The Thorncrown Chapel is made of native wood and stone and glass. The chapel opened in 1980. This special building was selected for the 2006 Twenty Five Year Award by the American Institute of Architects and even listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 and voted one of the fourth best buildings of the 20th Century. Mr. Jones died in September 2004 at 83 years of age, but left a legacy of his Ozark design for the most prominent people in the US, like Sam Walton, the fonder of Wal Mart, and Orval E. Faubus, the longest serving governor of Arkansas.
